4.30AM Monday morning. I didn’t sleep well because I was too disturbed and confused to do so. Yesterday, in church, I gave my life to Christ. I saw all the reasons why I had to follow him, you know and it just felt like the perfect thing to do(still feels like) but I’m confused! What’s gonna change? What won’t? Am I still going to enjoy my life henceforth? Will I stop being the jovial, funny dude and go all cold, thinking about Jesus all day? Do I sell my new pair of Jordans? Moreso, Bro James doesn’t dress like me!. Do I end my relationship with her? Do I really have to change everything I once was?
First things first, Now that you are a Christian, the first thing that changes about you is God wipes your slate clean and gives you a new fresh white page — a fresh start. You drop your sins i.e you take a personal decision with the conviction of the Holy Spirit to not sin, at least, not consciously/intentionally which doesn’t mean you don’t get to fall and it doesn’t mean your love for that particular sin(vice) just disappears overnight.
Now, you don’t get to take Christianity as some religion. It has to involve your lifestyle, that means, everything you! A Religion is an organized system of beliefs/rules, used to worship God. There are rules, commandments you don’t break but you shouldn’t restrict God to anything, open up about everything and let everything revolve around HIm. Your Christianity should have LIFE in it you know , where it is everything you live in. There is a school of thought that says Christianity is all about “read your Bible in the morning or night, pray before you eat dinner, go to church on Sunday” if you want to live this way, then you are not living christianity. It has to involve everything else too, your football arguments, your chats, your studies , everything, you gotta let God be the center. You dont get to call your dad first about every problem when you haven’t said a few words to God about the issue.
Your hobbies, the things you have passion for dont go away, and they dont even have to go away , provided they dont cause you to sin by the way. I love football a little too much but I can’t stop loving and watching football because I just gave my life, I just have to be sure football doesn’t take the place of God in my life.(God is a Jealous God, He has to come first!) the same goes for you and everyone, love who/what you love, draw , paint , do your thing but put God first and love him more than everythng.
Now, you have given your life to God, you need to grow. The same way you build your friendship with a new roommate, you need to have a personal relationship with God, you need to have something going on between you and God, that’s your own thing which involves you and Him alone. I first talked about the lifestyle, if you get to understand that God has to be involved in the most minute details of your life, then you have it all .Once you are a christian, you start to understand that God isn’t just a choice anymore, He becomes your first choice, your only choice ! Imagine how ineffective your relationship would be, if the only chance at fellowship with Him is when you go to church or when Mum forces you for devotion.
How do you build this relationship?
Prayer is a means of communication between you and God, so my dear, pray about everything , even the most (so-called) irrelevant of things. And when you pray, it doesnt exactly have to be for long hours, just say a few lines in Jesus name. I know you have heard it before, but I would say it anyways. “a prayerless Christian, is a powerless Christian”
Worship connects you to God, moves God, calls his attention, draws him, does things even prayer can’t do, makes you the individual God seeks! John 4.23 “But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him”(KJV)
Relationship with God is about knowing Him and one of the ways to not only know him, but to understand his majesty, his being and how he works is through study . A Christian should put time into the study of the word, so God can give you revelations and you can have a christian life in understanding. I am not saying you have to read 3 chapters a day or try to rush it, just go at your own pace, and ensure you grow…
Read Gospel Lits, Books, Articles and grow.
Love is like one very important part of the christian faith…
God wants us to love (Mark 12.31) You are supposed to love God more than everything else, you are also to have so much love for people such that when you see a person who isn’t in Christ, the Love of God in you makes you talk to them about God. SO, Preach to someone, everyone, have passion and care about people’s eternal destinations.
N.B:: Relationships are processes — you can’t jump the gun. Start slow, and be willing to move to the next level and God will help you grow in his understanding.
